Burials at the historic cemetery

Bonn Old Cemetery is not a general location for new plot allocations. Since North Cemetery opened in 1884, the old grounds have mainly served as a historic cemetery and cultural monument.

Burials now take place only occasionally. The city particularly identifies families with an existing family grave and people who have entered an agreement to sponsor a listed historic grave.

Establish the existing right or sponsorship arrangement

If your family already has a grave here, collect the grave reference and burial-right documents. For a historic-grave sponsorship, ask about a specific monument and the obligations involved. Sponsorship does not promise a freely selectable new plot.

Individual cases are decided by City of Bonn – Environment and Urban Greenery Department. Contact: +49 228 772241.

Conservation and future care

The whole cemetery has been listed since 1984. Discuss care, inscriptions and proposed work on a historic monument with the responsible office before commissioning a provider. The grave care page helps prepare an enquiry.

Plan a visit

The visitor address is Bornheimer Straße / Am Alten Friedhof, 53111 Bonn. The cemetery map locates entrances, St George’s Chapel and orientation points. Keep any supplied grave reference unchanged and observe visiting hours; the old cemetery is locked outside those hours.
